Timpani Handles

My chosen topic for my senior capstone project was to improve the ergonomics of moving timpani drums around, which is a notorious annoyance among concert percussionists. For something completely novel in the market, this posed an intriguing design challenge for how to make it function for as many timpani as possible. I landed on the concept of a pair of rotating handle attachments that clamp onto the struts of the timpani. They can fit any drum diameter as well as several strut designs from different timpani manufacturers.

Pantheon

This is a 4 week capstone project to design a dinnerware set with a common design language that included dinner plates, salad plates, bowls, a service platter, a service bowl, a teacup and saucer, and either a pitcher or a gravy boat. I decided to have some fun with the trend "how often do you think about the Roman Empire" and sought to design my dinnerware with a Roman aesthetic.

Acclimation Station

This is a design research project focused on overwintering plants over MN winters. I used research methods to gauge pain points in the process of transitioning plants indoors and outdoors, and to determine what product to design for. Plants should be gradually acclimated over a couple weeks to prevent stress, but this involves a lot of back and forth work, so I designed concepts to help acclimate the plants in place without moving them, by using a temporary enclosure that simulates an indoor environment that can simply be open and closed, saving plant owners extra work.

Berm Coffee Maker

Berm is a portable and durable drip coffee maker designed for landscapers and similar professions that involve rough and dirty worksites and daily relocation, so that they can make good coffee on the job site. It can be stored in their tool trailers and carried around, and it has a removable water reservoir. It can also accommodate power from tool batteries as well as an outlet.

Skua Ice Scraper

This was an ergonomics and grip studies project to design for winter labor workers and custodians who remove snow and ice from stairs. Depending on how snow and ice are present on a walkway, workers use shovels, ice scrapers, or salt. I focused on the ergonomics of the scraper especially, and I designed a bulged and sloped handle that can offer better control and help dissipate shock force to the hand with a larger surface area. I carved a maple handle prototype to replace the broken rubber handle on an existing scraper, and it has been in use for several winters.
